Chapter Nineteen
Vinnie swayed. Her ears felt cold and wet. She touched one, and her hand came away with something dark and sticky. Blood. The soft glow that lit the room had diminished, but the anomaly was still there. She could go after the woman and Maddie, but would she be able to come back?
Cerulean moaned. Vinnie stumbled over to where he lay slumped against the wall, humming to himself and staring off into space.
âCerulean?â
His eyes rolled toward her, looking eerily lit from within. âI closed it, itâs okay.â
The anomaly was still there, and he couldn't close it by himself, anyway. âClosed it?â
âThe hole.â The ice spike lay melting beside him, its tip dark. The thing was huge. How was he still alive?
She wanted to crouch down, but she wasnât sure she could stand back up. Growling in frustration, Vinnie reached over and flipped the light on. Not like she needed to worry about the killer discovering them now. With more light, she could see his shoulder, covered in blood, but there was no hole.
âYou used your magic to cauterize the wound.â That might not be enough. She needed to get him to Jory.
His smile looked feral for the second it was on his face. âIs the man dead again?â
Vinnie turned. There was a bloodstain on the wall where Will had hit, and he lay on his side on the floor. At least his eyes were closed this time.
Greg? She didnât know if he would hear her. It wasnât like talking to Hilda, who she could trust to pick up on her sent thoughts, and he hadnât responded before.
Greg. Will is injured. Knocked out.
There was a rumble in her head before the thought came through, faint. Is it safe?
The killer was here, but she's gone through an anomaly. The woman had come out of it and gone back in. She needed to get Cer out of here.
Greg poked his head into the room. âClear?â
Freaking coward. âWhere were you? We could have used your help.â
âIâm not a fighter, and Will has instructed me to stay out of dangerous situations. I am not to risk my life.â
She stood, incredulous. âYouâll risk his? You donât think heâd want you to save him?â
âNo,â he said simply and went to Will, crouching to check for a pulse. He grunted, reached under Will, and lifted him, straining under the weight. âIâll give you a ride if you canât drive.â
Her jaw dropped as he carried Will to the door. âThatâs it? You drag me out here to help, I nearly die. My friend nearly dies, and thatâs the best you can do? Offer a ride?â
Greg was halfway down the hall already. He paused and glanced over his shoulder at her. âIâll send someone to close the anomaly.â
Cerulean huffed a pain-filled laugh. âEveryoneâs a user, Vinnie.â
She guessed she better get moving, or Greg might just leave them. âWait, how did you get here?â
âHilda always leaves her key in her car. Thereâs a pocket in the glove box she thinks no one will find.
